ECB, EU officials warn euro's survival at risk

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Central Bank stepped up pressure on Thursday for a joint guarantee for bank deposits across the euro zone, saying Europe needed new tools to fight bank runs as the bloc's debt crisis drives investors to flee risk.

The European Commission's top economic official, Olli Rehn, warned that the single currency area could disintegrate without stronger crisis-fighting mechanisms and tough fiscal discipline.

The twin warnings came as worries about Spain's banks and Greece's survival in the euro area pushed the euro to a two-year low against the dollar and hastened a rush into safe-haven assets such as Austrian and French bonds, whose 10-year yields hit a euro-era low.

Spaniards alarmed by the dire state of their banks moved more money abroad in March faster than at any time since records began in 1990, official figures showed.

The 66.2 billion euros ($82.0 billion) net capital flight occurred before the nationalization of Spain's fourth biggest lender, Bankia, in May due to massive losses from a burst property bubble.

Irish voters seemed set to approve in a referendum a European budget discipline treaty vital to continue receiving EU aid. But the outcome of a second Greek general election on June 17, seen as crucial for Athens' future in the currency zone, is too close to call.

ECB President Mario Draghi urged Europe's leaders to clarify their vision for the single currency quickly, warning the European Parliament that the central bank could not fill the policy vacuum.

"We will avoid bank runs from solvent banks. Depositors' money will be protected if we build this European guaranteed deposit fund. This will assure that depositors will be protected," Draghi said, calling for an EU-wide banking supervision and resolution system.

EU paymaster Germany, reluctant to risk more of its own taxpayers' money in support of euro zone partners, has so far rejected any such joint deposit guarantee.

Chancellor Angela Merkel refrained from comment on calls for a banking union but said Europe should be ready to consider all options to stem its sovereign debt crisis.

"There are integration steps which will require treaty changes. We are not at that stage today but nevertheless there are no taboos," she told a news conference in the Baltic town of Stralsund.

Another top ECB official, executive board member Joerg Asmussen, said in Frankfurt that the 25 or so most important banks in the euro area should be supervised by a supranational watchdog rather than just national authorities.

Draghi, testifying before EU lawmakers, said the financial crisis had "heightened risk aversion in a dramatic way.

"I urge all governments to keep this in mind, because it is better to err by too much in the very beginning rather than by too little," he said, citing the repeated failure of national regulators to correctly assess the needs of failed Franco-Belgian bank Dexia and Spain's Bankia.

EDIFICE AT RISK

Another ECB policymaker, Bank of Italy governor Ignazio Visco, went further, saying political inertia and bad economic decisions had put "the entire European edifice" at risk and only a clear path to political union could save the euro.

"There are now growing doubts among international investors about governments' cohesion in guiding the reform of European governance and even their ability to ensure the survival of the single currency," Visco told the Bank of Italy's annual meeting.

Global investors retreated sharply from equities in May and held more cash than at any stage since the crisis erupted in early 2010, Reuters' asset allocation polls showed.

EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Rehn, speaking at a Brussels conference, said Europe needed both tighter budget discipline and more integrated rescue funds to avert a potential breakup of the euro.

"We need a genuine stability culture and a much upgraded common capacity to contain common contagion," he said. "This is the case, at least if we want to avoid a disintegration of the euro zone and instead make the euro succeed."

The dramatic tone of EU and ECB officials raises pressure on Germany to drop its opposition to bolder rescue measures ahead of a June 28-29 summit that could be a turning point in the euro zone crisis.

In another sign of pre-summit tension, France's new Socialist government is refusing to back Germany's candidate for the influential role of chairman of euro zone finance ministers amid differences with Berlin over joint euro zone bonds and bank recapitalization.

The European Commission, the bloc's executive, called on Wednesday for closer economic union and said its elements should include a banking union, joint financial supervision and bank deposit guarantees.

But a Commission spokesman said on Thursday there was no chance that euro zone banks could be directly recapitalized using the bloc's permanent bailout fund as it stands.

BETTING ON SPANISH BAILOUT

Spanish 10-year bond yields traded at 6.66 percent, close to euro era highs, due to market expectations that Spain may need international help to keep its troubled banks afloat - a prospect flatly rejected by Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

"The levels are definitely worrying. Spain is reaching zones where it is harder and harder to finance itself in the capital market," said Viola Julien, fixed income analyst at Helaba Landesbank Hesse-Thueringen.

The uncertainty over Spain, the euro zone's fourth biggest economy, is making it harder for other member states to overcome their own debt problems, despite rigorous austerity programs and structural reforms.

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti said his country was threatened by "huge possibilities" of contagion, and pressure from rising sovereign bond yields could complicate reforms.

"It is obviously a difficult place to be in, when you have a country displaying massive and concentrated efforts of consolidation and structural reforms, which are obviously politically and socially costly, and sees its position threatened by huge possibilities of contagion," he said.

He warned of a popular backlash if investors demanded deeper fiscal cuts and budget discipline beyond what was already being undertaken.

(AP) ? Computer technicians battling to contain a complex virus last month resorted to the ultimate firewall measures ? cutting off Internet links to Iran's Oil Ministry, rigs and the hub for nearly all the country's crude exports.

At the time, Iranian officials described it as a data-siphoning blitz on key oil networks.

On Wednesday, they gave it a name: A strike by the powerful "Flame" malware that experts this week have called a new and highly sophisticated program capable of hauling away computer files and even listening in on computer users. Its origins remain a mystery, but international suspicion quickly fell on Israel opening another front in its suspected covert wars with archenemy Tehran.

"This virus penetrated some fields. One of them was the oil sector," said Gholam Reza Jalali, who heads an Iranian military unit in charge of fighting sabotage. "Fortunately, we detected and controlled this single incident."

The Flame virus ? a mix of cyberspy and hard-drive burglar ? has been detected across the Middle East recently. But Iran's linkage to the oil network attack in April could mark its first major infiltration and suggests a significant escalation in attempts to disrupt Iran's key commercial and nuclear sites. Iran is one of the world's leading oil producers.

Two years ago, a virus called Stuxnet tailored to disrupt Iran's nuclear centrifuges caused some setbacks within its uranium enrichment labs and infected an estimated 16,000 computers, Iranian officials say. At least two other smaller viruses have been detected in nuclear and industrial centers.

The Flame program, however, is widely considered as a technological leap in break-in programming. Some experts also see the same high level of engineering shared by Stuxnet, which many suspect was the work of Israeli intelligence.

"It is very complex and very sophisticated," said Marco Obiso, cybersecurity coordinator at the U.N.'s International Telecommunication Union in Geneva. "It's one of the most serious yet."

Israel, a world leader in computer security, has never confirmed or denied any involvement in Stuxnet or other viruses that have hit Iranian networks nationwide.

Israel fears that Iran's nuclear program is geared toward developing a weapon that might be turned against it and Israel itself is believed to have nuclear weapons.

Israeli leaders have repeatedly said that "all options are on the table," a phrase that is widely interpreted as meaning the possibility of a military strike and other measures that could include cyberwarfare.

Already, Iran and Israel have traded accusations of carrying out clandestine hits and attack conspiracies in locales stretching from the Baku to Bangkok.

Iran claims Israeli agents are behind the slayings of at least five nuclear scientists and researchers since 2010. Earlier this month, Iran hanged a man convicted of carrying out one of the killings after allegedly being trained by Israel's Mossad spy agency. Israel denied any role.

Authorities in several countries, meanwhile, are investigating possible Iranian links to bombings and plots against Israeli targets and others, including a wide-ranging probe in Azerbaijan's capital Baku.

On the cyber front, Iran says it has sharply boosted its defenses by creating special computer corps to protect crucial online infrastructure. Iran also claims it seeks to build its own Internet buffered from the global web, but experts have raised serious questions about its feasibility.

Iran's Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology Ali Hakim Javadi was quoted by the official IRNA news agency Wednesday as saying that Iranian experts have produced an anti-virus program capable of identifying and removing Flame.

"The anti-virus software was delivered to selected organizations in early May," he said.

That would have been at least two weeks after officials say it penetrated Iran's Oil Ministry and related sites. Within hours, technicians decided to close off the Internet connections to the ministry, oil rigs and the Khark Island oil terminal, the jump off point for about 80 percent of Iran's daily 2.2 million barrels of crude exports.

Gholam Reza Jalali, who heads an Iranian military unit in charge of fighting sabotage, told state radio that the oil industry was the only governmental body seriously affected and that all data lost were later retrieved.

"This virus penetrated some fields. One of them was the oil sector. Fortunately, we detected and controlled this single incident," Jalali said.

Obiso, whose agency is helping to direct the international response to Flame, said the virus first came to the group's attention in mid-April and researchers have been working on unraveling its code since.

"We still think Flame has much more to show," he said.

The Russian Internet security firm Kaspersky Lab ZAO said the Flame virus has struck Iran the hardest, but has been detected in the Palestinian territories, Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.

It also has been found in Israel ? leading some Israeli security officials to suggest the virus could be traced to the U.S. or other Western nations.

Experts describe it as a multitasking mole. It can wipe data off hard drives, but also be a tireless eavesdropper by activating audio systems to listen in on Skype calls or office chatter. It also can also take screenshots, log keystrokes and ? in one of its more novel functions? steal data from Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones.

Israeli's vice premier on Tuesday did little to deflect suspicion about the country's possible involvement.

"Whoever sees the Iranian threat as a significant threat is likely to take various steps, including these, to hobble it," Moshe Yaalon told Army Radio when asked about Flame. "Israel is blessed with high technology, and we boast tools that open all sorts of opportunities for us."

Iran says is has previously discovered one more espionage virus, Duqu, but that the malware did no harm Iran's nuclear or industrial sites. Jalali said Flame is the third.

Dozens of unexplained explosions also have hit the country's gas pipelines in the past two years. Officials have not linked them to cyberattacks, but authorities have not closed the books on the investigations.

Yet another blow for Italian soccer

Alternate title: 2006 does not apply

Domenico Criscito, one of Italy?s projected starting XI at Euro 2012 (and a target of the country?s latest match-fixing probe), has been forced out of the country?s squad of Euro 2012. So yeah, this is a big deal.

How big is this Italian match-fixing probe getting? Aside from the list of prominent names being arrested in conjunction with the investigation (including Juventus head coach Antonio Conte), the controversy?s compelled James Richardson to write.

The host of the internet?s ?it? podcast (The Guardian?s Football Weekly) usually confines his benign musings to audio or video. This week, the former Football Italia host has deemed Italy?s latest crisis sufficiently important to take to a keyboard. Groovy.

By ?latest crisis?, I mean to allude to 2006. In the middle of calciopoli, Italy won World Cup 2006. If you bleed Azzurri blue, you might look at that data point and suggest Italy plays its best soccer under fire. Bring on the investigation, somebody (somewhere) is saying. Our team plays better when they?re under pressure.

To which I?d retort: ?What team??

In soccer years, it?s been a long time since Italy was good. How long? Well, way back when Italy was a factor at major tournaments (2006), Zinadine Zidane was still playing. Michael Owen had just returned from Real Madrid, Manchester City?s top scorer was Andy Cole, and Giuseppe Rossi had just debuted ? for Manchester United.

Since 2006, it?s been all downhill for the four-time world champions. They barely make it out of what was ultimately (and surprisingly) a bad group at Euro 2008. They didn?t make it out of their group in World Cup 2010, and drawn in the same group as Spain, Croatia and Ireland, there?s a good chance they won?t get out of their group in Euro 2012.

Head coach Cesare Prandelli has no choice but to select an unremarkable collection of talent that reflects a stoic period in Italian player development. Perhaps in Brazil the likes of Mario Balotelli and Sebastian Giovinco will be the finished product. In Poland, their most accomplished attacker is 34-year-old Toto Di Natale (10 goals in 36 appearances).

At best, Italy is an underdog to beat out Croatia (who has never lost to Italy) for Group C?s second quarterfinal spot. Even if we factor in a ?coming together? factor, they still look like a team riding an expired reputation. Unless Slaven Bilic?s Croatia plays to his country?s unreasonably low expectations, Italy?s in line for another major competition disappointment.

And all that is before factoring in yesterday?s news. Zenit St. Petersburg?s Domenico Criscito, who has spent over two years as Italy?s first choice left back, was forced to pull out of the squad after his room was searched by police in an early Monday raid. You can?t help but feel that were he not part of the team slatted for Euro 2012, he might have been arrest. With Criscito?s Genoa home also combed-over by authorities, it may only be a matter of time (part of the reason for withdrawing).

According to the Italian soccer federation (the FIGC), Criscito?s maintaining his innocence. He?s also sorry about the distraction he?s brought the team, part of an obligatory response. What?s he supposed to say? That the team thrives amid controversy? And he?s going the squad a service?

Best case scenario, for Italy: Criscito is as innocent as he claims, and his absence ends up being inconsequential. No team wants to lose a starter, but Italy?s got options. Giorgio Chiellini is a natural central defender, but he?s coming off a great year on the left for Juventus. The team also has Palermo?s Federico Balzaretti, one of Serie A?s best left backs. Are either of them Criscito? Over Italy?s three crucial group stage games, there may not be a difference.

The distraction of Criscito, however, could have taken the team down. The margins are so thin for Italy, a team that will have to break their Croatia cruse if they?re to make the quarterfinals. Having Criscito around may have provided a slight benefit on the pitch, but off the field, it could have undermined the entire tournament.

Spurs get 'nasty' to take 1-0 lead over Thunder

SAN ANTONIO (AP) ? Trailing in the fourth quarter, Gregg Popovich snarled an order in the huddle that the NBA Coach of the Year punctuated with a sharp and angry sweep of his hand.

"I want some nasty!"

But truthfully, Popovich was already getting what he really wanted: the San Antonio Spurs finally in a game they might actually lose.

Popovich's caught-on-camera "nasty" command in Game 1 of the Western Conference finals is likely coming soon to T-shirts, Internet memes and the lexicon of the NBA playoffs for the foreseeable future. But after beating the Oklahoma City Thunder 101-98 on Sunday night for their 19th win in a row ? tying the NBA record for longest winning streak kept alive in the playoffs ? Popovich wasn't flustered by the near-loss.

He was almost grateful for it.

"We wanted it about 15 games ago," Popovich said. "At least I did."

Manu Ginobili scored 26 points as the Spurs escaped a tantalizing near-upset for the young Thunder, who came closer than anyone to beating the Spurs for the first time in 46 days. But a nine-point lead didn't last after the famously mercurial 63-year-old Popovich huddled his lagging team together in the fourth and told them to "get nasty."

"I said that?" Popovich said afterward.

A nationally television audience heard it.

"The heat of the game, stuff comes up," Popovich said. "So I talked to them about they've got to get a little bit uglier, get a little more nasty, play with more fiber and take it to these guys. Meaning you have to drive it, you have to shoot it."

And when they did, the Thunder couldn't keep up.

Kevin Durant led the Thunder with 27 points. Russell Westbrook had 17, and insisted he was OK after taking a spill that was nasty in its own right ? face first, bracing his fall with his hands and sitting under the basket for more than a minute while the entire Thunder bench walked across the court to check on their All-Star point guard.

"I shot good shots, made good passes," Durant said. "Unfortunately, we lost."

After being held to just 16 third-quarter points, San Antonio scored 39 in the fourth. Westbrook chalked it up to a defensive breakdown that "got out of hand" but it still left the Thunder in search of the road win they'll need to in this series to reach the NBA finals for the first time since the franchise moved to Oklahoma City in 2009.

Game 2 is Tuesday night.

"How it happened is irrelevant," Thunder guard Derrick Fisher said of letting a lead slip away. "Whether we lose by 20 or lose by one, we lost."

That's something the Spurs haven't been able to say since April 11. They joined the 2001 Lakers as the only other team to carry a winning streak this long in the playoffs ? and that Los Angeles team did so on its way to a championship.

The Spurs matched the fourth-longest streak in NBA history, and with one more will become just the fourth team to surpass 20. Tim Duncan had 16 points and 11 rebounds, and Tony Parker shook off a dismal start to finish with 18 points.

And of getting "nasty"?

"Pop's always trying to motivate us," Parker said.

But it was Ginobili who steered the Spurs to strike first in a highly anticipated matchup of the West's top two teams for practically the entire regular season. In his first game against the Thunder this year ? he was sidelined by injury in the three regular-season meetings ? Ginobili put up a playoff high after sputtering through the first two series.

"It just happened," Ginobili said. "I don't know how exactly because I haven't scored like this all season long, but it happened and I am very happy about it."

On the other end, Oklahoma City's own Big Three struggled to find its shot early before awakening in the second half. Durant, Westbrook and James Harden at one point through the second quarter were 5 of 21 ? a typically ominous stat line for a trio that had been responsible for nearly 70 percent of Oklahoma City's points through the playoffs so far.

The Thunder were ousted in the Western Conference finals a year ago and were in position for home-court advantage throughout the playoffs until being overtaken by the Spurs in the final month of the season. But it was a fittingly close opener for two franchises with so many similarities.

That includes Thunder general manager Sam Presti ? the architect of the Thunder's rapid turnaround from a 23-win season to consecutive Western Conference finals in just four years ? getting his big break in the NBA as an intern in San Antonio.

And the Thunder didn't even need their own Big Three to keep things close.

They leaned on none more so than Fisher, whose famous game-winner for the Lakers on this same court in the 2004 playoffs has made "0.4 seconds" a phrase that needs no further explanation to the Spurs. Eight years later, and the oldest player in this series at 37, Fisher already met his playoff average at halftime and finished with 13 points.

Gary Neal added 12 points and was the only other Spurs player in double figures.

Harden lost in the first round of his matchup with Ginobili, who's also a lefty and a former Sixth Man of the Year winner. Harden finished with 19 points on 7-of-17 shooting but started by missing nine of his first dozen shots.

Tipping off another conference finals couldn't happen soon enough for Oklahoma City. With nothing to do but prepare for the Spurs all week ? and be asked about the Spurs ? the Thunder grew weary of questions about being perceived underdogs. About not having the same championship pedigree. About how they'll possibly stop a team rolling through one of the 10 longest winning streaks in NBA history.

So repetitive were the questions that Durant, visibly annoyed, suggested earlier this week that someone instead ask how the Thunder are going "to come at" the Spurs. That didn't stop Oklahoma City from facing more of the same at shootaround Sunday morning, when Thunder coach Scott Brooks tried quashing again the idea his team was somehow intimidated.

"They're not going to be in awe. They're going to have respect for them," Brooks said. "We know we can beat them."

They've still got to prove it.

Notes: Spurs C DeJuan Blair has given the Thunder fits in his three NBA seasons, including 22 points on them in a March win. But San Antonio's starting center for practically the entire season didn't play for the third consecutive playoff game. "The game will tell us what's appropriate and what's not," Popovich said before tipoff. ...Just because a Boston-Oklahoma City matchup in still possible in the NBA finals doesn't mean center Kendrick Perkins is hopeful about facing his old team. "I really don't care," Perkins said of the Celtics advancing. ...Gov. Rick Perry took in his first Spurs game this year, sitting courtside next to Spurs owner Peter Holt, a major donor to the former Republican presidential candidate.

(AP) ? Top-ranked Victoria Azarenka turned it on when she had to Monday, winning 12 of the final 14 games to reach the second round at the French Open.

The Australian Open champion, who took over the No. 1 ranking by winning in Melbourne, struggled for long stretches but came back to beat Alberta Brianti of Italy 6-7 (6), 6-4, 6-2.

"Sometimes I felt it was not my day. Sometimes I thought, 'Yeah, maybe I still fight, I still have a chance,'" Azarenka said. "Sometimes it was like, you know what? Forget it. I don't want to do it."

Brianti, a 32-year-old veteran with one career WTA title, won the first set and then led 4-0 in the second before losing six straight games.

Azarenka had 60 unforced errors.

"I think it says it all. Bad days happen," Azarenka said. "Unfortunately today I had way more mistakes than I usually do, but, you know, it happens sometimes."

Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer managed less stressful victories.

Federer beat Tobias Kamke of Germany 6-2, 7-5, 6-3. The 16-time major champion equaled Jimmy Connors' record of 233 Grand Slam match wins in the Open era. Federer is 233-35 at tennis' top four tournaments. Connors was 233-49.

"That's a big one, because that was longevity," Federer said. "Jimmy is obviously one of the greats of all time and was around for 20 years."

The top-ranked Djokovic, who is trying to win his fourth straight Grand Slam title, never faced a break point in beating Potito Starace of Italy 7-6 (3), 6-3, 6-1.

"It's just the first match here," Djokovic said in French on court after the match. "It's still a very long way to go before we talk about the final."

Defending women's champion Li Na also won easily, beating Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-2, 6-1. Last year, Li became the first Chinese player to capture a Grand Slam singles title when she won at Roland Garros.

No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, No. 8 Marion Bartoli of France, No. 15 Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia and No. 19 Jelena Jankovic of Serbia also advanced to the second round. The 15th-seeded player on the men's side, Feliciano Lopez, retired from his match with a side muscle injury after losing the first five games of the first set to Florent Serra.

Former top-ranked player Lleyton Hewitt also lost, falling to Blaz Kavcic of Slovenia 7-6 (2), 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-3. No. 7 Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic, No. 10 John Isner of the United States and No. 11 Gilles Simon of France made it through.

The strangest finish of the day occurred when Alex Bogomolov Jr. retired from his match when he was one point from losing.

The Russian was trailing Arnaud Clement of France 6-2, 3-6, 4-6, 7-6 (2), 5-4 when he quit the match while serving because of leg cramps.

"My whole leg was straight. I couldn't bend it. I couldn't walk," Bogomolov said. "I didn't want to risk a potential ligament damage or something."

Azarenka was first up in the main stadium, and she didn't look good at the start. In the opening set, she had 28 unforced errors. The top-ranked Belarussian started the 2012 season with a 26-match winning streak. Her first loss came in the quarterfinals at Miami.

No top-seeded woman has ever lost in the first round at the French Open since the tournament began to allow foreign entrants in 1925. In the other Grand Slam tournaments, it has happened four times, most recently when Martina Hingis lost in the first round at Wimbledon in 2001.

California District Court: DOMA Unconstitutional

Home ? Alan Colmes

A California District Court judge has ruled the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional, and she?s the third one to do so.

Claudia Wilken, a district court judge for the northern district of California, ruled on Thursday that congress acted unconstitutionally in discriminating against gay couples in the 1996 Defence of Marriage Act (Doma).

Wilken became the first judge to rule against the controversial legislation since President Barack Obama threw his weight behind gay marriage earlier this month?

This follows a 2010 ruling by Judge Joseph Tauro in Massachusetts and a ruling earlier this year by Judge Jeffrey White in California.

Wilken said gays and lesbians were constitutionally protected from ?burdensome legislation that is the product of sheer antigay animus and devoid of any legitimate governmental purpose?

2013 Ford Taurus SHO Review

Most people think that the Ford Taurus SHO story started back in the 1980s, but in a way it can be traced much further back than that.

FAST FACTS

1. 2013 SHO models get updated styling updates including a more aggressive front fascia with a mesh grille and larger splitter, plus 19-inch wheels, LED taillights and a decklid spoiler

2. A new Performance Package adds 20-inch wheels with high performance tires, an improved cooling system, performance brake pads, a tighter steering ratio a true traction control off mode and a 3.16 final drive ratio for better acceleration.

3. Powered a 3.5-liter EcoBoost engine and using AWD, the SHO makes 365 hp and can hit 60 mph in 5.2 seconds.

4. SHO models start from $39,200.

In the 1960s, after a botched attempt to buy Ferrari, Ford management asked its engineers to design and build a racing car that could beat Ferrari, particularly at Le Mans. This gave birth to the original GT40, a car that ended up winning the 24-hours of Le Mans endurance race a total of four-times, consecutively, starting in 1966.

Ford laid low for two decades only to then look into the idea of making a mid-engined sports car for the road to compete with cars like the Ferrari 308 and the Porsche 911. This project, which was internally known as GN34, was to use a 60-degree, 3.0-liter, V6 engine that was developed by Yamaha.

Sadly, the mid-engined sports car project was killed off, however, Ford had made a deal with Yamaha to produce a certain number of engines and there was no way to back out of that contract. Now Ford needed to find a home for these 220-hp motors and rather than stick this engine in a Mustang or Thunderbird, someone at Ford came up with the idea of turning the hugely successful Taurus into a sports sedan. Everyone at Ford backed the idea and hence gave birth to the 1989 Taurus SHO (Super High Output). It might have been a last minute idea to salvage a large number of high performance engines, but it worked.

Even when Ford stopped producing the SHO version of the Taurus between 2000 to 2009, the SHO cars still had a strong following, which was hard for Ford to ignore. So when Ford got to work on a new Taurus for the 2010 model year, a Taurus that was to get a high-output, twin-turbo, V6 motor, it was time to bring the SHO back. Upon its return, the SHO has done quite well; well-enough to keep the project going.

NEW-ISH LOOK

?

?

So with the arrival of an updated Taurus for the 2013 model year comes a new Taurus SHO. But is the new car worthy of the SHO badge or is it just a marketing scheme, playing more on emotion than engineering? We were invited by Ford to see for ourselves if this is a true performance sedan, or just pretender.

2013 Taurus SHO back lake

First thing you should know is that the 2013 Taurus SHO is not an all-new car. It shares its underpinnings and most of the body and interior with the 2010-2012 model year car. But there are quite a few changes on hand also.

From the outside, you?ll find a new, much more aggressive nose with a mesh grille (instead of the horizontal bars on the previous model) and a more pronounced splitter. From the side, you cannot ignore the new 19-inch alloy wheels (standard), which trust us, look much better in person than they ever do in pictures.

Around the back you?ll find new LED taillights and a sleeker rear spoiler. To be able to see better while backing up there is a new reversing camera, which now shows graphics based on your steering angle, rather than just straight lines.

2013 Taurus SHO interior

Climb inside and you?ll find that the interior volume has remained exactly the same, but the finishing is a bit nicer. There?s an updated infotainment system, plus all the old buttons and knobs have now been replaced by a soft touch panel which controls your HVAC and stereo system. This looks very impressive, but is not as satisfying to use.

?

ADDED PERFORMANCE

?

Pick the SHO Performance Package from the options list and you get an Alcantara suede wrapped steering wheel and on the outside are added even nicer 20-inch alloy wheels with black painted spokes wearing summer performance tires. Also included are upgraded performance brake pads with larger brake rotors both front and back. Gone, however, is a spare tire. Instead there?s a kit to help seal a puncture.

2013 Taurus SHO back driving rain

But wait, there?s more! You now also get sport calibrated steering for better feel, stiffer springs, tuned shocks and stiffer stabilizer bars to give you a more connected feel with the road, plus the AdvanceTrac traction and stability control device now also gets a ?Track Mode? with a ?True Off? setting, for when you?re feeling a bit naughty.

Not to worry about over-heating when you?re having fun, the package also adds an upgraded cooling system. Plus now you get a 3.16 final drive ratio for quicker off the line acceleration. Our test car had the ?Performance Package? option and trust us when we tell you, it makes a world of difference.

The acceleration off the line is truly stunning thanks mostly to the 3.5-liter, twin-turbo, V6 (EcoBoost) motor, which produces 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. Power is delivered to all-wheels via a six-speed automatic gearbox with paddle shifters plus with the new final drive ratio it now delivers a seriously impressive 0-60 time of just 5.2 seconds.

But more than anything the area the new SHO will outshine its predecessor is on a handling circuit. Standard on all new Taurus models is Ford?s ?Curve Control? and ?Torque Vectoring? system which will not only slow the car down if its going too fast for a corner, but will also balance the car by braking and transferring power to the wheels that can best use it. Both systems work quietly in the background making you feel like a pro.

2013 Taurus SHO fast wet

One thing we complained about on the regular 2013 Taurus was a lack of steering feel, as the front wheels are too disconnected to give positive feedback. The SHO model with its sport calibrated steering does go a long way to improve this, while the larger wheels with summer tires on the ?Performance Package? also help.

Still, this isn?t the kind of car you feel like chucking through the corners just for fun, due mostly to its size. The 2013 SHO is a big car (202.9-inches in length) and it doesn?t feel like it shrinks around as you increase the pace.

THE VERDICT

?

We like the new Taurus SHO. It looks better than ever now and it?s packed with technology. However, we do wish it was more special than it actually is. You see, what set the original SHO model apart was its unique engine. As good as the 3.5-liter, EcoBoost V6 is, it can be found in a variety of other Ford and Lincoln products.

2013 Taurus SHO big splash

?

For a starting MSRP of $39,200 the SHO is quite a lot of car for the money, and will for most people be a very satisfying car to own. But while the new SHO can fulfill the needs of many, we don?t desire one, like we desired the original.

Are You Aware of the Serious Nature of ... - Decor Garden Home

May 24th, 2012 at 9:50 pm

Glen Campbell is one of many people around the world who suffer from Alzheimer?s, and he was forced to retire because of the disease. Alzheimer?s isn?t picky about the type of people that it causes problems with, and anyone no matter how rich they are can be affected. There is a lot of difference, though, when it comes to the type of care that?s available to the different groups. For those fortunate enough to have money, it will be no problem to pay for care in the form of caregivers, but those in the low- and middle-classes will have a much more difficult time.

Some of the lucky Alzheimer?s patients have someone who can care for them at home, at least in the first stages. Alzheimer?s is a disease that gets worse over time, so it will become a bit more difficult to care for patients properly. Certain long-term care facilities and nursing homes will accept patients with Alzheimer?s, but an appropriate facility can be a huge expense and located so far away as to put a huge burden on family members.

Although someone can?t be cured of this disease, they?re capable of living for quite a few years after a diagnosis has been made. During that time they experience progressively more mental, behavioral, and memory lapses. It is very important to keep a watchful eye on Alzheimer?s patients since they have the tendency to wander away from home sometimes. Putting their loved one away in a facility isn?t an easy decision to make for most people. Diseases can really cause people to lose their ability to care for themselves, and it can be hard for family members to witness this ongoing transformation.

Although medications exist to help people deal with the disease, they have side effects and don?t produce the same effects for everyone. Also, not everyone will benefit the same way from these medications. No type of medication will be able to cure the disease though. Once dementia sets in, your loved one will benefit greatly from professional care. It is best that you take the time to find a reputable nursing facility with appropriately trained staff to ensure that your family member is well cared for.

It?s never easy to get older, and it only gets worse if you?re unfortunate enough to get Alzheimer?s. While there are no simple answers, there are certain realities we must face which include finding quality care for loved ones who are suffering.

Kristie Brown writes on a variety of topics from health to technology. Check out her websites on dementia care and nanny services.

Is Long Term Birth Control More Effective? - Healthy You Now

?

This arti?cle orig?i?nally appeared on Yahoo.com

Women who choose birth con?trol pills, the patch or vagi?nal ring are 20 times more likely to have an unplanned preg?nancy than those using long-term meth?ods such as IUDs and implants, a study?found.

Among young women under 21 who chose the pill, the patch or vagi?nal ring, the risk of unin?tended preg?nancy is almost twice as high as that for older women, accord?ing to researchers at the Wash?ing?ton Uni?ver?sity School of Med?i?cine in St.?Louis.

The study, car?ried out on 7,500 par?tic?i?pants between the ages of 14 and 45, appears in the May 24 New Eng?land Jour?nal of Medicine.

?This study is the best evi?dence we have that long-acting reversible meth?ods are far supe?rior to the birth con?trol pill, patch and ring,? says senior author and OBGYN Jef?frey Peipert.

Intrauter?ine devices ?and implants are more effec?tive because women can for?get about them after clin?i?cians put the devices in?place.?

Unplanned preg?nan?cies remain a major health prob?lem in the United States. About three mil?lion preg?nan?cies per year ? half of all preg?nan?cies ? are unplanned, very high for a devel?oped nation.

?We know that IUDs and implants have very low fail?ure rates of less than one per?cent,? said lead author Brooke Win?ner. ?But although IUDs are very effec?tive and have been proven safe in women and ado?les?cents, they only are cho?sen by 5.5 per?cent of women in the United States who use contraception.?

IUDs are inserted by a nurse or doc?tor, but few women can eas?ily afford them as the cost can reach around $500.

How?ever ?when IUDs and implants are pro?vided at no cost, about 75 per?cent of women chose these meth?ods for birth con?trol,? Win?ner?added.

That means that greater use of longer act?ing con?tra?cep?tive meth?ods by teens and young women could pre?vent sub?stan?tially more unplanned pregnancies.

Mentors to help 4 young researchers prepare for EU competition in Bratislava

This press release is available in German.

Four young researchers had two reasons to celebrate at this year's awards ceremony for Germany's "Jugend forscht" competition in Erfurt. Not only did the young researchers place first in their respective fields, they were also awarded the Europa-Preis of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation).

Alexander Emhart (19) from Kreisgymnasium Riedlingen, Timm Piper (16) from Martin von Cochem Gymnasium in Cochem, and Jan Rapp (19) and Timo Schmetzer (17) from Otto Hahn Gymnasium in Ostfildern all received this twofold distinction.

Alexander Emhart won the national "Jugend forscht" award in the field of chemistry. The young chemical scientist from Baden-Wrttemberg received the prize for his project "Hydrogen in its Pure Form", for which Emhart developed an electrolytic cell with the capacity to separate hydrogen efficiently from other gases produced during the fermentation of biomass. Timm Piper won the national award in the field of physics, and received the prize for his project "New Insights into the Microcosm". Jan Rapp and Timo Schmetzer, who specialise in mathematics and computer science, were awarded the Prize of the Federal Minister for Education and Research for the Best Interdisciplinary Project. The duo developed a computer-controlled plate capable of balancing a ball on its surface for their "Electronic Balancing Act".

The Europa-Preis was presented to the four "Jugend forscht" award winners in Erfurt by DFG Vice President Professor Peter Funke. Established by the DFG in 2010, the Europa-Preis was created to highlight the importance of international experience for a successful career in research. The winners will each receive 1,000 euros in prize money, and the opportunity to participate in the European Union Contest for Young Scientists (EUCYS), which will be held from 21 through 26 September 2012 in Bratislava, Slovakia. In the run-up to this event, the young researchers will be tutored by special mentors, who will also accompany them to Bratislava. These mentors are carefully selected by the DFG from the early career researchers which it funds, with the aim of facilitating the development of lasting networks between generations of researchers.
